Hardware and Software Requirements (2024)

The following recommendations should deliver satisfactory performance in each indicated category. If your implementation is particularly demanding, you should increase both RAM and processor speed to compensate. Simultaneous usage of resource-hungry applications such as Microsoft Office also demand more RAM. Please refer to System Recommendations for SOS 2010 and Later for greater detail.

Standalone Computer or Network Workstation

  • 1.6 to 2.5 GHz processor or higher (Intel i3 and above or AMD Zen series processors).
  • Windows 10 Pro, or Windows 11 Pro.
  • At least 4 GB RAM. Larger databases will require more RAM.
  • 6 GB or more disk drive space.
  • 19" monitor or larger running 1440 x 900 resolution or higher.
  • Backup system, preferably external drive, or other removable media such as USB.

Network Server for Small Workgroup (up to 6 workstations)

  • "Dedicated" server that is not also used as a user’s workstation.
  • 2.5 to 3.5 GHz processor or higher (Intel i5 and above or AMD Zen series processors). The database will take advantage of multiple/multi-threading/multi-core processors, if present.
  • Windows 10 Pro, Windows 11 Pro, or Windows Server 2016 or above to host the database.
  • 8 GB or more RAM (highly dependent on size of database, 16 GB recommended, but 8 GB should meet the needs of most small to mid-sized installations).
  • A high performance hard disk drive, SSD drive recommended.
  • 20 GB or more disk drive space.
  • Any monitor.
  • Backup system, preferably external drive, or other removable media such as USB.

Network Server for Large Workgroup (7 or more workstations)

  • "Dedicated" server that is not also used as a user’s workstation.
  • 4 GHz processor or higher (Intel i7 and above or AMD Zen series processors). The database will take advantage of multiple processors or cores, if present. A multi-processor/multi-core server will provide significantly better performance, especially as the number of simultaneous users increases. Note that the standard server license is valid for up to four processors/cores. If running on a larger system, there is a modest additional charge for every four processors/cores above the first four.
  • Windows Server 2019 or above to host the database.
  • 16 GB or more RAM (highly dependent on size of database, 32 GB recommended, but 16 GB should meet the needs of most large installations).
  • Two or more high performance disk drives, preferably SSD.
  • 50 GB or more disk drive space.
  • Any monitor.
  • Backup system, preferably external drive, or other removable media such as USB.

Special Issues

  • Note that new installation and upgrade files will need to be downloaded from the Support, Download Files section of our website. Your internet speed is a factor for the download time.
  • All your workstations must be running Windows 10 Pro or above. For satisfactory performance we would recommend a 4 GHz or faster processor and no less than 4 GB for Windows 10 Pro. SOS Office Manager will not install on Windows XP, ME, 98, 95, or older.
  • Virtual server environments such as VMWare and Microsoft Virtual Server are not supported. If you install on a virtual server and unusual issues should arise, SOS may require that the installation be moved to a traditional server before providing additional assistance.
